LIBRARY OVERVIEW


EMEA College library was instituted with the inception of college in 1982. The library was started in the commerce block and finally moved to the existing newly constructed building in 2014.  The central library of EMEA Arts and Science College was named after the late founder as Shihab Thangal Central Library and Research Center. The primary aim of the library is to establish a learning environment for the users as well as to encourage and support the professional & individual growth of EMEA community in the search for knowledge. The library promises to promote the mission of the college by empowering academic community of the College with enriching collections, innovative services, and state-of-art technologies as well as to discover, preserve, and disseminate knowledge. It acts as a centre for the collection of resources predominantly related to all subjects offered by the college. The college library which is an integral part of the higher educational institution plays a pivotal role in acquiring and providing access to books, periodicals and other media that meet the educational and informational needs of its users in a stimulating, scholarly environment conducive to academic pursuits.

The Central Library which is housed in an independent, two-storied building with a carpet area of over 6700 sq.ft. is well equipped with modern facilities and resources The library area which is easily accessible for library users is segregated in various sections like  Circulation Desk, Reading Room, Stack Room, Periodical section, Reference area and Knowledge Resource Center. The Library stacks a comprehensive collection of printed as well as electronic resources which include books, journals, databases, CDs/DVDs, e-journals, reports, case studies etc useful for the academic community. Presently the library has an extensive collection of over 23000 books and also subscribing to more than 60 serials (which include journals, magazines and newspapers) maintained in a professional way for quick retrieval. The EMEA college library caters to over 1500 students pursuing undergraduate and post graduate courses, research scholars and about 100 faculty and staff members.

It is a fully automated Open Access library and KOHA, the web centric library management software is used for computerizing all the housekeeping operations. It is the first Open source library automation software. Koha is built using library standards and protocols such as MARC 21, UNIMARC, z39.50, SRU/SW, SIP2, SIP/NCIP, ensuring interoperability between Koha and other systems and technologies. It is a true enterprise- class ILS with comprehensive functionality including basic and advanced options. Koha’s OPAC, circulation, management and self-checkout interfaces are all based on standards compliant World Wide Web technologies – XHTML, CSS and JavaScript – making Koha a platform- with independent solutions.  Library is modernized with barcoding based automation system that facilitates check-in, check-out and renewal of books. The KOHA also provides OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) and web OPAC.

 Apart from this, our library has a separate digital library which has been developed using DSpace software in the year 2019. DSpace is an open source repository application that allows capturing, storing, indexing, preserving, distributing and thus managing the institutional knowledge resources in a professionally maintained way. Library has 2 separate servers for database, library management software and DSpace. Every functional unit in the library has been equipped with a network computer to enable smooth information flow.
